Updates

yaggui checks for a new version only if you allow it. When one is available, it installs it the way that fits how you installed yaggui. This page also covers the What’s new dialog, which lists the changes of each release.

The update check is off until you turn it on. When it is on, yaggui reads the latest release on github.com at each launch. When it is off, yaggui makes no request at all.

On the first launch, yaggui asks once with a notification: Check for updates at startup? It stays until you close it.

  • Click Check for updates to turn the check on. yaggui checks right away and at every launch after that.
  • Close the notification or ignore it to leave the check off. yaggui does not ask again.

To change your choice later, open Preferences (⌘,, Ctrl+, on Windows and Linux) > Behavior and switch Check for updates at startup.

The check at startup is silent: when yaggui is up to date, or when you are offline, nothing is shown.

You can check at any time, even with the startup check off:

  • Preferences > Behavior > Check now.
  • The command palette: Check for updates.
  • The Check for updates button of the What’s new dialog.

A check you start yourself always answers: a notice for the new version, yaggui is up to date, or an error (see When an update fails).

yaggui downloads latest.json from the latest GitHub release over HTTPS and compares versions. Drafts and pre-releases are never offered.

When a newer version exists, a notification titled yaggui <version> is available stays in the bottom-right corner until you act on it or close it. Its button depends on how yaggui was installed.

Installed from Button What happens
macOS .dmg or Homebrew cask, Windows .exe or .msi, Linux AppImage Update and restart yaggui downloads the update, checks its signature, installs it and restarts
Linux .deb Update yaggui downloads the new .deb, checks it, and installs it with apt in the upgrade dialog
Linux .rpm Update yaggui downloads the new .rpm, checks it, and installs it with dnf (or zypper) in the upgrade dialog
Arch Linux AUR (yaggui-bin) Update yaggui runs yay (or paru) in the upgrade dialog
Anything else, such as a build from source Open the release page your browser opens the latest release

A notification shows Downloading yaggui <version>… with a percentage. When the download is complete and its signature is valid, yaggui installs it and restarts on its own; your tabs come back. On Windows the installer runs with a progress window and no questions.

For the .deb, .rpm and AUR packages, Update opens the Updating yaggui to <version> dialog. It holds a terminal where the package manager runs, so you can type your password and answer its questions.

  1. For .deb and .rpm, yaggui downloads SHA256SUMS.txt and the new package from the release into its cache folder, and checks the package’s SHA-256. The dialog shows Downloading the package… <percent>%.

  2. The package manager starts. The dialog shows Follow the package manager below: it may ask for your password. The command is one of:

    Terminal window
    sudo apt install /path/to/yaggui_<version>_amd64.deb
    sudo dnf install /path/to/yaggui-<version>-1.x86_64.rpm
    sudo zypper install --allow-unsigned-rpm /path/to/yaggui-<version>-1.x86_64.rpm # when dnf is absent
    yay -S yaggui-bin # or paru -S yaggui-bin
  3. When it succeeds, the dialog shows yaggui <version> is installed. Restart to use it. Click Restart yaggui, or Close to keep working and restart later.

While the download or the package manager runs, Close is disabled and Esc goes to the terminal. Only x86_64 packages are published.

The What’s new dialog lists the changes of each version, newest first. It is built into the app, so it works offline. It never opens on its own after an update.

Open it from:

  • the yaggui <version> button at the right of the status bar;
  • the command palette: What’s new (changelog);
  • Preferences > Behavior > Version > What’s new;
  • on macOS, Help > What’s New in yaggui.

Each release has its version, its date, and up to three groups: New features, Fixes and Other changes. The version you are running carries an Installed badge. The footer has Check for updates and Close.
